Tianna's Comment
I agree with Alexandra about a radical being a reverse of raising a number to an exponent... This can or cannot make sense to some people... It depends on the person and their amount of skill in Math... Not saying everyone or some people are dumb.. But a lot fo the things we have learned are difficult i guess... So learning this could take a while... In the end.. im sure we will have al lthe skills we need...

Merb's Comment
Well.. yeah.. like Lanna said, this is really hard to comment on because well.. a radical's a radical and you can't really change someone's mind about what it is. Oh man.. oh yeah, and as Lanna repeated after Tianna, Chels also said that radicals could be used in science and chemistry and, well I didn't think about that until reading from your guys' posts. So thanks for the insight guys =)

It's sort of hard to respond for this one..Ya..um..Tianna said that radicals or whatever could be used in science and stuff. I don't really see why it couldn't because they're both really confusing sometimes. :) haha...i don't really know what to say for this one..All I still really know about them is that they are hard to make sense of when you don't really understand them :).

Radical. Hm. Oddly enough, I think of surfing when I hear that term. Strange.
So, as everybody else has discovered, a radical is a quantity, number, or amount, expressed as a root of another quantity. A radical can obviously be used in math, otherwise we wouldn't be blogging about it.. probably. It can also be used in Chemistry.
Example #1) : the squared root of 225 is 15 because 15x15=225. The radical is 15.. right?
Example #2) : the cubed root of.. 289 is 17! 17x17=289. What the heck? I said cubed root. I meant squared root. Geepers.

Blog Extension
This blog entry is extended till next Sunday. That means if you have not posted I will allow you to post this week without penalty. During the final week of school you will be required to comment on one person's post, still 50 words. Good luck and get your stuff IN!!!
Just want to say this makes absolutely no sense to me. So I am just going on what I have googled. So a radical is a root sign. A radical is the reverse of raising a number to an exponent. The sign of a radical looks like a check mark thing. It is not on most keyboards. So it can not be shown here.
EXAMPLES
checkmarkX= -3
(checkmark X)2=(4)2
X=16

- A radical is a symbol placed over a number or an expression, called the radicand, to indicate the root of the radicand. When used without a sign or an index number, it designates the positive square root of the radicand i.e. 2. If both squares are meant, the radical is preceded ±. To indicate higher roots of the radicand. The radical sign is usually taken to indicate the principal root of the radicand, although any radicand with have (n) different nth roots. Radical is used to refer to the entire expression using radical signs and a radicand.
-examples: the square root of 16 is 4 because 4x4= 16
another example would be the square root of 56 is 8 or 7 because 7x8= 56

A radical is a root symbol. Which is the root sign you could use to figure out the square, cubed etc. root of a number. And it's .. not.. on.. my keyboard! Yeah.. you need to have a number beside or in? the radical to show whatever root it is of.. I think.
So, for examples.. say the square root of 4, you would have the check mark thing and then a four, and the answer is 2.
Another example would be if you had the root check sign thing with a 3 above it or on it or something, it would be the cubed root of, say 6, and it would be 6 x 6 x 6 = 216. So the cubed root oh 216 is 6. Oh ma days.. I hate explaining things.. it works in my head, but its so hard to put into words! Oh, and I think I have to say where we use radicals? Yeah.. in math.. I have no clue where else.
Christina
The radical is the number you use to each side of an equation.
for Example: n+21=54, to find the answer to this question you must minus both sides with the radical which is 21.
n+21=54
n+21-21=54-21
n=33
from what Ive seen the older grade (9) was doing a different type of radical as Sam was saying the radical is the root of such as squared and cubed, I believe that too, but right now in grade 8 we are doing something different.
Our radical we are working on in math is main use for algebra, and answering equation.

A radical is a symbol which is not labeled on most keyboards, So I will just tell you what it looks like. A radical is a check mark looking symbol, which is used to represent a square root of a number. A radical is mostly used in math but I guess it could be used in other things, but I can't think of anything else that it would be used for because there are easier ways to show some one a square root of a number without the wierd check mark.
EXAMPLES OF RADICALS
check mark, then a 5
3 squared, check mark, then a 7

A radical is a root sign. Radicals need a number to define what root it is. With square roots, the two is generally left off. With cube roots a 3 is written in little numbers on top of the left side of the radical. The index tells how many times the root needs to be multiplied by itself to equal the radical.
For example,
1. The square root of 9 is 3. This means that 3 x 3 = 9
2. The cube root of 64 is 4. This means that 4 x 4 x 4 = 64
For example,
1. The square root of 9 is 3. This means that 3 x 3 = 9
2. The cube root of 64 is 4. This means that 4 x 4 x 4 = 64

What is a radical?
A number that, when multiplied by itself an idecated number forms a product equal to a specific number. That is what i found. And like lanna, i have no idea what it means. i dont know how you use them or what they are used for. i odnt get how they are used. I would put an example on but i cant. i dont know how to do that check mark liney thing that you do. i will try to do an example.
that check marky thing then the rest is x+3=10
the second example is: the check markey thing x+2=6

One thing I know about radical (or whatever it is) is that it DOESN'T make any sense to me. This is what an online dictionary defined it as: A number that when multiplied by itself an indicated number of times forms a product equal to a specified number. For example, a fourth root of 4 is √2. Also called nth root. Well, I guess it...umm... It still doen't make sense to me. (Is it like a root sign thing over a number will equal half or something???)I don't really know how to put it in my own words. I guess it uses algebra..that's really all I can get out of it. To me, all it can be used for right now is making me confused because it doesn't make any sense to me. I guess that once you understand it, it can be used to make equations like that less confusing (?). Maybe it's helpful in the older grades or whenever you need it. Well, I don't get how it works, but here is an example I found: The number under the root symbol is called radicand.
The expression ⁴√a (something like this) is read as “a radical n” or “the n th root of a”. An example could be √14=7 and √5-1=2
there..I hope it's good enough.

Radical means the root of a quantity as indicated by the radical sign.
Examples:
√4 = 2
⁴√x = x
You use radicals in math.

radical, in mathematics, is a symbol placed over a number or expression. The radical sign is generally taken to indicate the principal root of the radicand.!@#$%^&*
it is really hard to find an example!
EXAMPLE: when you do a question like n+3=5
the n is usually a radical and then they have those weird check mark looking cymbal.
here is another example of a radical: check mark z+6=12.
an bad example of a radical is when the equation is in front of the check mark thing.

Josiah - Nov. 2 week post
My group (Tyson, Sam, and I) sort of joined forces, you could say, with another pair of students (Mercedes and Chelsea) to do our scale map of Comox Valley Christian School. We sort of split up the measuring and stuff, so that each group would have equal work. Both of the groups still had to produce a separate map, but the work was completed much quicker. We at first chose to use a LONG measuring tape, but our group genius, Tyson, broke it. We then spent the next class unraveling it. Then, we tried a different approach. The pace wheel. This tool was much quicker to use, so we decided to stick with it. Our strategy's advantage was that it was sooooo fast and easy to do. A disadvantage was that only one of our joined groups could use the wheel, so one group was always waiting around, or wandering around aimlessly. I think that our strategy worked.

i either cram, or never study :P... in my past years of school, i never studied for like tests or anything, but i still somehow aced them... i think i did good anyway because i have a killer memory...but anyway, back to the point... i dont really care how i study. or how much i study. i just never seem to get any more out of it when i do. even if studying could/might help me, i probably wont do it, because i have a life outside of my schoolwork, and that means i have better things to do in my opinion. not studying has worked for me in the past, so why not continue doing so...

My studying techniques?? I donno, i guess i kind of just look back and find out what i dont know and what i cannot do and figure it out! But i really really really like having a practice test, because it helps me figure what i know and what i dont know. So, when i know what i cant do, i go home figure it out and wala! I am done! It is fabulous! I donno, i am kinda a crammer like emerson said!
I really think that i, i donno, it is just easy for me to cram! I donno, i just cope with it! I am not suffering but ya, i just do it and it works!
CRAMMING WORKS FOR ME!! (but if that makes me get a bad mark on stuff then, i dont cram!)

When I study for a mid-term or some other test I usually just study everything for a couple of days or as much as I can in that day. I think it is better to study in small portions more often than larger portions less often because it is easier to remember it if you go back to it many times and you don't have to cram everything at once. Next time I tend to study less portions in more time because it will be easier and better for me to remember.
Chels.
If I study at all, it's cramming, either the night or morning before. I'm sure that it is smarter to study less more often than to give your brain a whole whack of food and then stop. That's how you forget things super fast. If you taken bits and pieces more, then I'm sure it will be processed with a higher.. remembrance. I'd like to have excellent marks, but studying is a pain in the butt. I guess I'll study every once in a while, depending on how badly I think I need it.
Christina
I personally don't like studying I have nothing against it but its all the information I put in my brain goes in one ear and out the other. Through this year I wanted to keep going with the way i did last year studying at the last second so I could remember. It worked I got all A's except for Math (B almost got an A) but this year I can't because it's hard to do that with all the other important matters on my hand. So this math mid tirm I tried to practice with my sister that night, because I want to check if I knew the information. Then the day of the test I did a study group in the Library. After I figured out an amount of questions I went and asked Mr. Mckague about some questions.
I can't really answer your question because I don't know the answer. I try to do different things to study but I just haven't found the right technique yet.
As I reflect I realize I need practice and help to understand the full competencies of the information and even this question.

Yeah.. like Emerson said.. almost all of the time I cram on the last night. I know its not the greatest thing to do, but I'm not failing any classes or anything. When I do study I look over notes and see how things work etc. I also would do a study sheet that a teacher gave me to help my studying get a better outcome. I would like to be a better studier, because I know all those statistics about how you remember a lot more if you do more studying over a couple days instead of one night. But its real hard sometimes because, I guess I just don't feel like it!
Lanna
When I study I usually just do the review work you asign to us..or tell us it'd be good to do. I'll usually try to figure out the ones I don't get too well and that helps. I didn't actually study lots before because tests were never like they are now...but ya. When I'm studying for bigger tests like the mid-term, I search through the chapters in my text book and go to the examples and solutions at new points. I'll try to do the examples and then I'll see if I'm right below. It's probably better to do smaller more because then it's not too much of an overload to your head, but I don't usually do that, or haven't. Umm....I don't really know how it's working for me. I guess I'll find out soon from the mid-term. :)

Personally i do not really "study" i sort of do it now and then and then a day or two before the test i like to study in 15 minutes time periods because.
I am sort of ADD and cant stay on focus when it comes to studying on my own i am no go meaning
I HAVE TO BE PUSHED!
I think it is better to study in small portions because than you take in information faster and better. When i study i sit at the table and study for 15 minutes and than when the 15 minutes is over i go outside 9when it was sunny) and play 10 minutes of volley ball that way i have a goal and i then study harder.
Like when doing the blog post i write a sentence and then leave and while i am i think of what to write and then i have fresh ideas and it is easier to understand and more well written.

Hmmm.... I guess I am a scattered kind of studier. I don't usually intense study for math test because it is kinda hard to. I don't like sitting for long periods so I do a little bit here and there. Maybe a snack or drink break in between. Some times I will to a review before the subject if I can. It helps to keep it fresh. I am a decent memorize so it helps to memorize. It is a good way to study. I am more of a crammer though. I usually put test studying aside so I can do homework. i don't like spending much time doing school work. After like an hour and a half I max out, maybe.

I am personally not a fan of studying.. i usually dont study for long periods of times becasue i usually will forget it all... I do small portions of studying and thats the best stratagie for me.. I go over problems and do the review for the chapter.. As for the Mid term tomorrow i am super nervous, and i may have crammed a bit to much, so i am going to take a break for tongiht and do some for tomorrow at lunch.. I think that would help the most because it is right before the test... I hope this works out for me.. i will know if this is the best for me after the test when i get my scores back... Tests are big stress factors for me and i get really nervous... So I'm just really excited for this to be over..

I’m not trying to brag, but
NORMALLY, I DON’T STUDY FOR THE MATH TESTS.
But I know that I did horrible on the last test, so I prepared for it in the class trying to figure out why did I get some of them wrong. Amen to Emerson, you told us to express how we feel. I feel that I’m spending and wasting some time writing works. I’m sorry, but that’s just how I grew with. If you get the answer right, then you get them right regardless of works.
Anyway, I think that it’s better to study in smaller portions more often because it’s good to look things over and over again. I think I study in larger portions less often, but I hope that everything would change when I go to Korea because when I go there, it would be the time of competency of good life and bad life. It works for me here, but I’m pretty sure that I would have to change it in Korea.
Bye ( I WILL KEEP WRITING THE BLOG ) (-__-;;) Whew!

Hello my name's Emerson and I'm a crammer.
I CRAM AND IT WORKS, AND I'M NOT ABOUT TO CHANGE THAT!
Okay, when I study... I just write everything down on recipe cards and then read them over on the bus. Also, do any study sheets the teacher's given us, then review them lots.
I find this method works really well and I don't see any flaws. It's flawless, Ima decent student. Why change something that isn't broken and it works fine? Unless of course it's like an iPod or something. That's a whole different story.
So, I'm tired of blogging (you told us to express our feeling Mr.McKauge) so i'm gonna stop bye.

As you are studying for your mid-term (or other tests), what are some strategies you use to study? Explain and describe these strategies. Is it better to study in smaller portions more often or to study in larger portions less often? Why do you think so? What did you do, or what do you tend to do? Reflect on how this works for you.

My group which is Angela, Kate, and me are counting by strides. This can be a advantage and disadvantage. The advantage is that it is easier and it doesn't seem to take as long, but the disadvantage is that we don't all have the same stepping way, mean we don't step the same. We all do the same one then spreading out and going different places at once. It seems like a long process but it is much easier so we dont feel unsure about or strides.
Chels.
That darn mapping project that makes me so happy! =) I'm working with Mercedes, and I guess our "strategy" was the meter wheel.. Except it sort of broke. We did do strides at first, but it was kind of a pain. It also wasn't very efficient, because our steps are different every time we take one. The meter wheel seemed to work while we had it.
sam
Me josiah and tyson are drawing our scale map together . The system we decided to use is the metre wheel. We chose the metre wheel because it is quick and efective. The only problem that it has is it is broken.
Alexandra
Me and Tianna did out project together. We went around with our measuring wheel thing. It was easy because we just had to count the clicks. We found that a fast easy way to do things. You just go around the buildings and count. Some advantages is that this is a fast easy way to do it. It is more actuate than strides. You just have to know what you are doing. But we are not always exact and could of miss counted. But i still think our way had more pro s than cons. I t was a fast simple way to do it.
Saturday, November 7, 2009
Kate, Christina and I are doing it together and we found the simplest way is strides. I though it was a good choice because it is quick and easy. One downside is that like Tianna said the slightest mis calculation could mess us up. In the end i am happy with our choice! Us three work well together, one thig that i am glad about is that we dont have to sit there with a measureing tape moveing from wall to wall.
Friday, November 6, 2009
Well me and alexandra were partners and we decided to get alll our measurements done first!! We havent exactly finished but we are pretty close... We had the clicky measuring stick and whenever it clicked it was equal to 1m. We firgured that our scale factor was going to be .5cm to 1m. And that was going to work for us best. An advantage of our strategy is that we got our work done a lot quicker because the thing we used to measure with was an easy and quick way to get measurements. A disadvantage might be that we could have gotten wrong measurements. We arn't 100 percent correct. So if things went wrong out whole scale drawing could be off. But we are hoping for that best and i think we are track :)

Billy
Emerson and I are doing the assignment together, so I pretty much agree with him. And we followed Mr. Mckague’s strategy. We first drew the rough draft of the school by looking at the Google Picture. Then we just measured everything that’s on it. We also added some more things, and I think that the stride is way faster and easier to do the measuring because they don’t easily break like the other measuring tools. For me, I think it is the best way to do it even though it’s not really accurate. But whatever because we are just doing the math assignment. HEE HEE. Bye.
Lanna
Well, at first we didn't really have any strategy other than get the boundaries first. Today, though, I drew out a rough sketch of the school and then we started measuring the boundaries again. After we're done with the boundaries we'll probably find out everything else and write it down on the rough sketch. Once we've got everything measured, we'll probably go and find a scale factor and draw it out. I think this is the best way because a setch could help you keep all the numbers going to the right laces and then the boundaries are a basic outline for everything. Advantage=not confusing this way, disadvantage=I can't actually think of a disadvantage.....It's a pretty good strategy.
Emerson.
Billy and I drew out the school according to the photo on Google Maps. Then we went and measured everything. Once this was done, we went inside and drew the school again. But converted the stride lengths into centimeters (using our scale to do that though!). Tomorrow we'll draw it out nicely with our centimeter scale. THIS IS THE BEST WAY. I think it's the most
efficient and a lot of people are doing it this way. I don't see anything wrong with doing it this way. It's seamless. Haha. Not really... bye I guess.

When you are creating your scale map drawing of the school, what is your strategy? Is the best way? Give an advantage and disadvantage of your strategy.
Josiah
I definitely agree that we see proportions and similarity in the area of people, houses, foods, cars, and many other things on our planet. If a businessman is making a scale model of a mall, as a proposal to what he wants to build, he will need to make all of the features proportionate and similar to the life size mall ideas. this is important to do so the building company doesn't screw up and make the parking lot too small or big, or the mall itself not able to accommodate as many stores as wanted. if that happened, the manager would be very angry and hire someone else.

David
You can see proportions and similarities every where outside, in stores, at home and a whole bunch of different places. City workers need to use proportion a lot, ex. If they are building a parking lot they have to make the parking spaces in proportion to the cars. Also in stores there are many things you can buy that are similar to other things, their shape might be the same or what they look like but they aren’t congruent.
Merb.
We see proportion and similarities everywhere. People, houses, other types of buildings, technology, and pretty much everything we look at. Lots of times we compare things and look for similarities without even noticing that we do it. Money-like other people said- is a good example of proportion. Another example is when there is one counselor for so so amount of kids ..
Alexandra
Similarities are everywhere. For the way we dress to the cars we drive. People look alike. Like that show on TV where the make people look like celebrities. And the obvious example twins. Proportions are around too. Expect we might have to think or look a little harder. Like the Courtenay dairy queen is only a small part of the huge franchise. Or that I am only a small part of the whole Millar family.
Sam
Ithink that we see similarity in buildings, people and in houses. We see proportion in our everyday life like in juice containers and in shipping cantainers. These things are important in are everyday life.
Tyson
We see proportion and similarity almost every day in our life's. Just like Emerson said about going to the grocery store, do you want a one litre of milk or a four litre. We have proportion to help us not waste or get to little of something like if I had a family of three, I would probably get the four litre jug of milk. But if it was just me, I would get the one litre. We also see similarity everywhere even through people, you could be a twin or have a similar personality as someone. proportion and similarity are right in front of our faces almost every day of our lives.
Lanna
Ya to what Billy said about proportion...the money thing. Similarity is everywhere. Similarity with people (You can't have identical twins without similarity) and similarity with clothes. It'd be TERRIBLE for clothes people who make them and stuff if they were ALL different and not once repeating the same patern and design. Animals can have similarity if you don't stare at them until you find something different. I think it's important because for similarity for people it can show how alike 2 or more people can look but how different they can actually be or are and the whole clothing thing. Proportion can be important so you know what you're getting into and the posibilities and ya.
Chels.
I see proportion and similarity all over the place. First of all, proportion could be considered as something like.. okay, my bedroom is just a small part of the my house. A large proportion of my house still remains. CVCS is just a portion of the students in the valley, so proportion is there as well! Similarity shows in clothing, personalities, cameras, cars, colors. You name it, and there has to be something similar somewhere.

you often see proportion at in many places such as buisnesses for example, Without symmetry and proportion there are no principles of disighn in architecture and other disighning prodjects. Adapted relitivly is what i am trying to say! and similarity is also very important when it comes to architecture cause without simalarity than there would be no balance in what we do.

With proportion its everywhere like you could have a tall person and a short person a fat person and a skinny winny person... Sad, happy... get the point!!! so yeah its like so easy to find... With similarity i think of it as twins twins are similar.. Also like some animals look the same an elephant is going to be pretty similar to another elephant.. dogs not so much because there are so many different breeds and stuff.. With zebras as many have said.. most zebras look the same.. so yea there is a lot of proportion and similarity i the world and u can find it if you look for it... It wont take that long... :)

With proportion it is every where not only at home but at school too. with home when there are eight pieces of chicken breast and there are four people in the family then each person get two pieces of chicken. At school people like to share food so they spread out how may each gets for example if I had a package of fruit gushers ( 8) and 5 people asked for 1 I would give them one and have 3 left for myself. proportion is another word I think for sharing it is to evenly give or take proportions. With Similarity in life there are twins as billy an d Emerson said not only that but appearance, two people could look exactly the same and never know that there was someone that was like there twin. There are other examples not only human beings such as food, if you look in one bag of popcorn you could find the exactly same piece of popcorn, another one is in a bag there is an exact pair with two chips in the bag. It goes on and on the possibilites for proportion and similarities in the world.

We see lots of proportions and similarity. There are similarity people like twins like Emerson said, and the same type of animal like zebra looks all the same. You wouldn’t know without making the mark in their ear or something. Also you really need to careful because you can’t see the difference between the water and alcohol only with your eyes. For the proportion, it is important because when you bet for something with somebody or make some deal, you need to clarify the money that you’re getting. They usually use the ratio like 4:6 or something.
Miranda
Where do you see Proportion and simalarity in the real world? ummmm.... i would say that you see it in, you could see it in clothing. Like if two people have the same shirt on, or same pants or somthing. I think it is important because without it we would have too much of different things and we would not see similarity in stuff. Soo ya.
Okay, before I say anything. I'm gonna say that most people get part of their salary every 15 days. Not once a year.
Anyways, Where do I see proportion and similarity on this wonderful planet that we call Earth? I see similarity in twins. We have twins that work at our school. Twins are similar! And we see proportion like everywhere! I mean, you can buy a half liter of milk or a whole liter of milk. One half liter times two means you get a whole liter of milk! Uh, it's important because you do not want to buy to much milk!

I think having an hourly wage is good for something and a salary is good for other things. An hourly wage is good for if you work extra hours, so that you can get more money. And a salary is good for having always the normal amount of money you urn. They both are good, but it dispense on what your job is.
Tianna...
I definatly think getting paid $ per hour would work best for me because if yuo get paid by salary you only get it once a year. I would only say that if it was a small job or buisness. If you wor kat a top production or something like that then maybe it would be better to be paid yearly. But it differs for different people.. Some might say its better to be paid through salary some may say by hours..... For realtors you get paid every house they sell.. If you dont sell a house you dont get paid..
Alexandra
I think money per hour would be the best for me. With salary you only really get in once a year. If you have any extra cost you cant work extra for different things. And you know how much you have depending on how many hours you work. but that's just for me. If you are a business man or woman salary would probably work better. Some jobs your hours are not always consistent. It is good then to have a steady paycheck. You would have to be careful how you spend.Or what you spend it on. So depending on who you are and where you work it really makes the decision easier.
Lanna
Well, I'd have to say a salary or money per hour. Dollars per hour would be good if I don't know how long I'll be working there or how long I'll be staying in an area. Salary would be good, too, but you only get that money once a year. You'd have to be careful and be wise with your money. I don't really know. I wouldn't choose a salary if it were a bad job that I didn't like. Commission wouldn't be the best because what if you didn't sell anything?? Then you'd have to work alought harder to try and make money. I'd have to say salary or dollars per hour.
Wednesday, October 21, 2009
Billy
I think it depends on the job that I’m working on. If I’m like working in the McDonalds or something, I would defiantly choose the hourly wage. If I am very serious about this job and I love doing it, I would like to get the salary because I don’t have to worry about the money, which comes annually. I don’t like the commission because you don’t get money if you don’t sell anything. So, the money that comes in would be up and down all the time. Then, I would have to worry about the money and keep focusing the job in my life too much. That is why I would like to be paid by salary.

Emerson.
Well, I think a Salary is the best one. Because then you know how much money you'll make each month and can budget and stuff. Instead of have money in the bank that fluctuates. Like, one month you have (not realistic) 60,000$ so you spend it all and then the next month you don't sell anything. So what do you do? You starve =) Not really... But it's better to know what you're making, when you make it. So you can manage your money well. Plus, it would be harder to take out a loan or get a mortgage if you say "Well, sometimes I get some money and other months I don't..." the bank is more confident in you when you come and say "I make 60,000 dollars a year"

Do you think it is better to get paid by comission or by salary ($ per year) or by an hourly wage? Why do you think so?

I think the average math mark would be 76%, because it is not the best mark or the worst mark. It is just between 100 and 50%, like tyson said. And its not tough getting 76%.
CHELS.
I guess I would say the average math mark would be approximately.. somewhere in the neighborhood of.. oh, maybe.. 77.5% I think 77.5% would be near the average percent because some students have a harder time than others. Not everybody is failing, but not everybody is knocking it out of the park. 77.5% would be raising the bar a little above the in between mark on account of the occasional keener. Yeah, that's about it. Yup.

Christina
I think that 80% is average and that it is a good number to get but it would be better to get higher like 90% because then you would get B or A.
Tyson
I have to agree with Tianna that a 75% is an average mark. I think this is average because you are half way in between getting 100% and a fail witch is below 50%. You are also getting three quarters of your work correct witch is pretty good in my oponion. It would be best if you got over it though because you only need a few more to get a B in that subject. That is why I think 75% is an average mark.
Tianna.... 86 words :)
I would have to say that 75% is an average mark.. Because you arn't failing but your not getting A's. A passing mark is 50% and a failing mark is below 50%. An (A) is 86% or higher, so i think 75% is average becasue it's somewhere inbetween a failing and a Pass. I guess 80% is around average to but it really depends on what we are doing.. If its like a test then i would say 75% is a good but not fabulous mark.
Wednesday, October 14, 2009
Lanna. . . ....and I have 81 words!
Hmm... I think I'd have to say 75%. For some things in math we REALLY get and do really well on, or can do really well on, and some things we don't get and do terrible. Some people are good at some things and others at other things. We all won't be good at the same things. 75% isn't a bad mark either. I think that 80% could be an average too. 75% or 80%. It kind of depends.
Tuesday, October 13, 2009
Billy (71 words)
I think 80% is about to be the average because Canada has fairly nice education system. There are free textbooks at school, and lots of benefits for going to school and actually finishing it. It is really hard to fail the grade from grade 1 to 6, but after that, it goes harder than before. I heard that Vancouver's students are very hard studying for the university. That is my answer.
Alexandra
I think 75%ish is averge. It really depends on the test. Sometimes it will be a great test and the averge mark is 80%. Sometimes most people fail, so the averge mark is 60-65%. But I think 75% is a good averge. There will always be the people that seem to score at least 90%. They will keep the mark up. But sometimes people get an okay mark that can bring the grade averge down. So 75% is a good guess. since it is a middle number between 50 and 100.
Emerson.
What percent do I think is average? Hmm, I would say... 75% because the average person doesn't fail most assignments or ace most either. The average person would get half and half ish. Leaning to failing but also leaning to acing it... Do you know what I mean. Like, 75%... is "around" half way through 50 (failing) and 100 (acing it) So it's kind of half way. Most people are half way there (That sounds like an insult but it isn't, I'm just saying most people aren't fabulous at everything but they don't suck at it either) So for me; average would be 75%.
MIRANDA................. 74 words!
I think that around 80% is an average student mark. I think this because most student that I know get around this mark. I think that this is a great mark! If I get over this mark I am pretty happy! 80% is a B. And getting a B is not bad! I would say that a range between 70%-100% is pretty normal! I am proud to say that, that is an average! YAY!

You can use fractions in baking. If you want a job as a pastry chef you need to use measurements which use fractions so that's another way. Fractions are used in construction like when you are mixing chemical mixes such as cement. In music for bars there are 3- 4ths time 4-4ths time they are fractions. Fractions are used in a large amounts of things and I'm glad it exist.

Fractions
We use fractions in many different thing, I will name three, cooking, measurements, and division. You need to know fractions in cooking or alts you would not know how much of an ingredient you need to make something. In some kinds of measuring you need to fractions, so if your a carpenter you need to know fractions. And finally you need to know fractions in division which you learn in school.
Fractions exist all over the world almost everywhere that i know of. We use them in our everyday life at school, at home, and work. You may not notice it but we use them alot more than we notice. Fractions could come in many forms EX: hey mom how much milk is left mom replys about one fourth ok thanks.

Miranda
Fractions are used alot! I didnt really think about it but now that i have, i relize that we use the alot. They are used for baking when you are measuring out how much to use you can have like, 1/2 a cup and such. We use them on tests, papers and school work. Like, 30/30 or 15/30. We use them when we pay like if you get a sale you might only have to pay 1/2 of the price!
Lanna
You'd have to be stupid not to know where fractions are. They are used all the time, for cooking and telling time sometimes. We use them at my parents auction when we give items inventory numbers and there is more than one item in a lot. There are a lot of uses for fractions. A whole bunch of businesses use them all the time. We use fractions for school when we get our marks of assignments or tests. Really, there are a lot of things that we use that involve fractions.

Mercedes
Well.. lets see. Fractions are used in life when you're baking, measuring out all of the certain ingredients. And when telling the time to someone you would say "Quater to." or "Quater after." Depending on your job, you could end up using fractions all the time. Really, any job that involves math. In stores everywhere you look you see signs with fractions of prices off items, and on a bunch of food, they would say something like "Half the fat of other leading brands." So.. those are some ways we use fractions in everyday life.
Chels.
Where are fractions used in life? Fractions are everywhere!! We use them in so many parts of life. Telling time for example. People say, 'quarter to two'. Or when you are baking, driving, filling up the gas tank.. counting money, the odds of winning the lottery, playing music.. I could easily say that we all use fractions daily without even realizing it most of the time.

Fractions are everywhere. If you every want to cook something you have fractions. You have to know how much. Stores everywhere have fractions. In almost every store you will go in there will fractions. A 45% of sign. We also use fractions when taking about things. Like I an three quarters of the way through this book I am reading. Or something like we are half way there. Also when you get your test scores.
Josiah
Fractions are in many parts of life. You use fractions to measure all kinds of different ingredients when you are going to cook things, measure wood and beams when building a skyscraper or even just a little shelf and such (3/4 inch by 8 inch, blah, blah, blah), and store owners use them in their sale advertisements. For example: Backpacks--Buy one Get one 1/2 price!! that is where you can use/find fractions in everyday life.
Emerson.
Just gonna put this out there Mr. McKauge... I hate blogging for school with a passion of a thousand burning suns. It's really dumb! Where do fractions exist in this world. Well, earlier I made Toll House cookies and I had to use fractions for that. 3/4 Cups of Brown Sugar and White Sugar. 2 1/4 Cups of Flour. 1/1 Cup of Chocolate Chips. Haha. 1/1. Also, when store have sales you can turn percents into fractions to help you see how much you are actually spending. Example: A store has a big red sign that says 75% off. You know that means that you only have to pay 1/4 of the price. Fractions are everywhere.
Tianna
You can use fractions for many many things.. Like Billy said with pizza.. and like tyson said with buying things.. But i guess you could use fractions for cooking and baking.. like if it says to use 3/4 a cup of sugar.. I personally love using fractions and measurements while cooking, i dont know how people just put random thigns and make something.. i like to have things perfect.. And of course we use fractions for math.. Thats where i use fractions the most in my life.. i guess thats because i have to do fractions because it's math :P...

Tyson
Fractions are being used in alout of everyday lives. For example if I was saving up for something like a car and I had three thousand of the ten grand I needed I can say I have one third saved up so far. I also agree with Billy's statement about pizza or if theirs any other food you needed to distribute among others you can give each person one third or one fourth of the food.
Billy
When I eat pizza, I can notice the fractions of the pizza, which is normally cut by 6 or 8 pieces, that is the fraction. The fraction can be mostly found in the math class. It is very useful for changing the long decimals to a simple fraction. If you want to be a math teacher in the school, you will definitely learn about the fractions. Now that is the real world of learning and teaching for your future. Anyway, it also exists in the scientist’s brain and their works. For example, Albert Einstein used lots and lots of fractions to prove something, and his work still exists in the world. I’m almost absolutely sure that there are more fractions exist in the real world than we could possibly imagine.

Probability is a huge part of our life's. Some peoples life's are run by probability. Like things as lotteries or betting Their whole life sometimes depends on probability. Or even just calling a flip on a coin. Some sports games are started by the flip of a coin. Sometimes new parents will paint their nursery because of an untersound or just guessing. There are so many things that happen because of probability that we don't even realize.
CHELS.
In my opinion, probability is a larger part of our lives than we realize. It's not necessarily by choice, but it just happens. I think it's one of those things that we don't ever think about, so we decide that we never have anything to do with it. I don't really like learning about probability in math.. I kind of think it's boring. Oh well. It comes around almost every year, so I guess I should just get used to it.. Haha.
Thursday, September 24, 2009
Tyson
I honestly also think that I will not use probability that much in my life. I can't even think of a time I have really thought about the probability of somthing so far in my life. But thier are such things that you could use it for like the probability of getting a new car or an old car. Also the probability of how much money I will be making in ten or so years.
Christina
I think that probability can come up with a lot of things. Even though you shouldn't always do this but wining at the lottery or when you go to a casino its always chance. There are other ways like when a woman is pregnant and she's waiting to hear if its a girl or a boy she's probably thinking the chances it could be a boy or a girl. In my life it would be the probability of getting into an accident. when I'm playing a game the probability i might win, but as i grow up i think there will be more ways of probability in my life.
Math Question
The only time in my life I think about probability is when I play games with cards or dice. I usually don't think about it when I use it, but it's good there is sutch thing, like when you find the odds of winning the lotorry, and other things like that.
Sam
I don't think that i will ever use probability much in my life . I think that probability is very easy. I don't like how in our text book we sometimes learn skills that i dont think that we will use much in life, like probability. Ithink that we should foucus on the fundamentals. That is my feelings about probability.
Lanna
Like almost everyone said, I don't think probability is very important in my life right now and I doubt I've used it a lot. I like it because it's really easy, but I don't really use it at all except for games and I'm not even thinking about anything related to probability then! There must be some things in life that I'll need it for, but I can't really tthink of any right now.
I think in my life the only time i use probability is when im playing games ( which is usually in math). I dont really use it outside of math... I actually dont know how you would use probabilty in any other way... Probability can be challening in math but not really. I find it fun to do games like we did the other day!! Seeing other peoples idea's. We should do it again for sure!!!
Miranda- How has probability been involved in my Life?
Probability is not a huge part of my life. In fact I don’t think I use it at all really. I don’t think probability has been involved in my life very much so far! I do not remember learning about probability before so the only time i really have used it is, in board games and card games. I used to play board games quite a bit, but I am not as fond of them now. Well, maybe I use it in some stuff, but I don’t remember using probability recently. Except in math class, and that’s not by choice.
Emerson.
The only time I can think of probability being useful is when I play board games (like Billy said). I think this probability is just another thing someone wants us to learn in math. I honestly don't see it for any good. Other than it's easy to get one hundred percent in probability. It's stinking easy! Unless I get a career in the lottery business or something that uses probability; I don't think I'll be using it very often. But that's just at this point.

It hasn't really effected or been an important part of my life yet. But I sometimes play monopoly with my friends, and I think it is the one of the probability board game. If I grow up and do the lottoes, that would probably be involved in my life because there are some chances to lose such an amount of money or get lots of money. There is my Answer...

I dislike math it is frustrating t one even though i know it is very important in life it is very hard to me and it is a very strenuous task. i think a way to make math more fun is that if we did more hands on activities to understand things more or to teach the lesson. I don't know if i will start liking math but i think i would understand it more if we did that.
Lanna
I like math sometimes. Some times it just makes me want to scream and other days I find it a lot of fun. I really like timesing. I don't now why but I find it lots of fun, even timesing more than 2 digit numbers. I like doing the those 5 minute mental math too (Will we be doing more than just adding?). I really HATE problem solving. Unless they're really easy and I can get them right away. Sometimes I just can't get myself to concentrate and I end up with a headache, or there's way to much math that needs to be done. I think that I'd say that I like math...most of the times :P. I hope this year is a good year and I learn lots. I also hope I won't go home with lots of homework all the time or headaches.
TYSON
I myself find math a pretty good subject. It's not my favourite subject but I like it more then most of the other subjects. I like how math is straight foward, their is only one answer that is right and the rest is wrong but that is also a bad thing because I get confused on some questions and it drives me crazy sometimes. I like the idea of the minute madness thing (I forget what it's called) because it gets me focused and ready for the lesson. I'm a little nervous for this year's math but i'm sure it will be great.

some days i like math and some days i just want to not do it. i enjoy the geometry units and measurement and integers. they are fun to work on and sometimes a challenge, but i like to do them anyway. some things i don't enjoy- problem solving, some division and multiplication. i used to hate math lots and stuff a few years ago, but i kind of enjoy it now. that is basically what i think about math.

Math is really not my favourite subject! In fact if you don’t mind me saying, I hate it. I am not very good at it! I think that is why I don’t like it. I don’t think math is dumb, even though I say that a lot, I think it is very important and a good skill to have! This year I am assuming math will go well. So far I have not struggled too much but we are only on the second week of school. This year I plan to work hard in math and have a positive attitude in it.
Math...Well lets just say its not my strong point. Math has almost always been a challenge for me. So naturally I don't really look forward math. But I am going to try my best. I like how we do the mental math challenges every morning. It is good to keep us sharp. I guess we will see how the year goes on.
CHELS.
Personally, I enjoy math. I like the number part, but I don't think I'm a fan of the blogging part. Maybe it will grow on me. ;) I like that math is black and white. It either works or it doesn't. I'm glad we're doing the mental math problem things every morning. I like the challenge and also that it keeps those skills fresh.. I would like it if the grade nines should prep for grade ten this year too. Looking forward to a good year!!
Math has never been my favorite subject.I dont think i will enjoy it.One of the main things that i do not like about math about is all the steps that seem pointless.another reason is that if you get one step wrong you get the whole thing wrong.that makes math a lot more grueling then it acully is.however i am still going to do my best.
Most of the time I enjoy math, unless I am really struggling with something and just can't seem to get anything right. I guess I could say that I am a little nervous for this years math curricular just because well, its going to be more challenging, like it gets every year. But I know I have to do my best because... well it's critical for my career. Too bad! ahhahaa jk! Yeah.. thats pretty much it.

I do not reallylike like math, but I know mathimatics is an important skill.I like graphing I find that graphing is easy. Iam not very good at multiplication and I would like to get better during the year.I also like the multiplication charts we do as a class.Math is my least favorite subject. Those are my felings about math.
Honestly i really dont like math! its not my favorite subject at all! I probably can learn to like it but it will take time... I am capable of doing the questions and figuring it all out but some times i need help! :) When it comes to tests and quizzes I dont mind them but like i said not the greatest at them! I hope Mr.McKague will make me love math... I love it when i actually get something and do it right that make me feel proud!! But im pretty sure Math wont be that horrible because i know i have people to help if i get stuck!!
math (my opinion)
Truthfully i do not really like math but as i have been learning through this past week i have realized i do not mind it. I know it is very important for any career. Latley supriseingly i have been enjoying doing graphing. One thing i am very thankful of is getting the sheets with all the present and future assighnment because i am a very neat and tidy person (sometimes)also because it allows us to always have work so we do not waste time.

I think of grade 8’s math would be probably easy for me because I learned it already in Korea, but also it will be an advantage for me because it is all English. In Korea, it is important to do the math, but in these days, we, the Koreans, have to learn it with another totally different language. Personally, I love math even though it is very hard and sometimes complicated. I’ve been to the CVCS last year and I was in grade 7. It was really easy year for me but as I go to grade 8 now, I feel like I’m being challenged. Well, I’m really pleased to be in your class and I hope that you will teach me well!

I have mixed feelings about math. I like it but I don't like it. I like it when the work is challenging and it's not endless pages of long division equations just waiting to be solved. But when the questions are problems that have different parts and are fun but challenging I really like it! Like I said, I don't like it when it's boring. So I'm sort of looking forward to this year in math but I'm hoping Mr. McKauge doesn't like to use math as something to bore his students with.... I hope math class will be fun and challenging too!
